What is MSDNAA?
MSDNAA is the Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance. Full
details on the program offerings are available on the program web site
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/academic/).
Why did I get an email from some strange company about Microsoft software for free? Is this spam?
We see lots of strange emails offering free deals. If it is referred to the MSDNAA program, it is real. The School of IT&E subscribes to this program as a service for our students.
I don't want to receive emails from Microsoft about their software. How do I get off their list?
The program privacy guidelines prevent sharing your email ID with anyone. The email with your password and ID is the only email you should receive.
MSDNAA account access
I just heard about the MSDNAA program. How do I access it?
In compliance with Microsoft policy, access to the MSDNAA program sponsored by The Volgenau School is restricted to students currently enrolled in an eligible IT&E course.
Enrollment information comes from the Mason Registrar system (PatriotWeb) and is uploaded during the week prior to each semester and then updated weekly through the course add deadline.
If you are registered for an IT&E course and want to access the site, please read the information here (http://labs.ite.gmu.edu/reference/faq_msdnaa.htm#software).
When may I download software? I registered for a course next(last) semester and need to access the downloads now...
MSDNAA program policies limit access to students registered during the current semester for eligible courses offered by The Volgenau School of Information Technology & Engineering. Course registration information is usually uploaded during the week prior to the start of classes.
I never got an email with my account information. How do I get my account ID and password?
All students registered for IT&E courses with software requirements have been enrolled in the MSDNAA software site and should have received an email with their ID and password. If you did not get one, please check your spam filters for it. If it's not available, please go to http://msdn05.e-academy.com/gmu_bsit/ and click on the "Log in" link.Select the option for "I forgot my password" and enter your gmu.edu email address as your username. A new password will be sent to your gmu.edu email address.
I tried requesting a new password and nothing happened. What do I do now?
Please adjust the security privacy settings in your browser to something lower.
What is available
I don't see Microsoft Office listed. How do I get that for free?
The MSDNAA program is for developers and Microsoft does not consider Office to be a development package. As Microsoft Access is a development
environment, that is available through the web site. The University has an agreement with Microsoft that permits you to purchase a copy of
Microsoft Office through the campus computer store (Patriot Computers in JC) at a price below the normal academic pricing.
I need software that isn't listed for download. How do I get that?
We have made available software that faculty identified as necessary for our courses. If you need other software for your courses, please send email to the support contact on the download site and include detailed information supporting your request.
Download files
I downloaded the file but it's very small. How do I get the software I wanted?
The download site does not work well with browsers other than Microsoft
IE. Rename the downloaded file with a .exe extension and run that file,
which will initiate the download of the software package requested.
Changing a file extension usually changes the icon for the file. To be sure you can see file extensions, open My Computer
(or any File Explorer window) and on the Tools menu choose Folder Options. On the View tab, in the Advanced Settings area,
uncheck the checkbox for Files and Folders\Hide (file) extensions for known file types. Apply the change.
What do I do with a file with an ISO extension?
The ISO extension is used for files that meet a standard used to create CD images. Software such as Roxio CD Creator or Nero Burning ROM are
required to burn a CD from that file. There are also programs available to extract the files from an ISO file.
Installation
How do I get a new activation key if I can't find the old one?
You can see your original activation key on the software site. Click on "My Software, then click on the order number, and then the
download link for the software title. Your key will then be displayed.
How do I get a second key so I can install the software on my home PC and on my laptop?
The program policies restrict each student to a single installation of any software package.
